Aortic Dissection:
An Aortic dissection is when there is a tear in the wall of the aorta and blood flow begins to
collect between the different layers of the aorta. A dissection separates the inner layer and the
middle layer of the aorta, where blood collects. This can happen anywhere along the aorta.
Signs & Symptoms:
Chest pain that can move around the chest
Tearing/ripping sensations in the upper back usually between the shoulder blades
Numbness or weakness of the legs
**If dissection is involving the ascending aorta, this is usually a surgical emergency**
**If dissection is involving the descending aorta only, it is usually managed with
medications**
There are two types of aortic dissections:
Type A Aortic Dissection: Tear anywhere on the ascending aorta, it can start from the
aortic valve and can extend as far down as the belly. The only part that will be surgically
repaired will be the ascending aorta.
